The architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) the most representative of Catalan Modernism,designed liturgical banks with kneeler for the Crypt in Colonia Güell. They were built by the cabinetmaker Thomas Bernat. 20 units were made at a price of 20 pesetas (€ 0.12) each. In the inventory of 1974 there were 15 banks, the other 5 were sold in 1972 by the parish priest to a dealer for the price of 2,000,000 pesetas each (€ 12,020). One is at the MOMA in New York. In 2011 one of this banks was auctioned at Sothebys in Paris reaching a price of € 384,750. These banks are for two people, with an ergonomic design that Gaudí applied at all his furniture. They measure 82.9 cm x 113x66 cm. The seat height is 42.2 cm. They are built in oak and wrought iron riveted. |
